Contents

Safety

  • Will die or be captured soon, like all the other Tailies.
    • Not necessarily. None of the other Tailies became integrated into the main Lostie group, possibly because they had no known constant. Rose and Bernard may be each others' constants. They don't know the term yet, but they know the result. (Remember Rose knowing (in her heart) that Bernard was alive?) It may have to do with being happily married.
  • Will not die because he was not supposed to be in the tail section (was in seat 23E). Wasn't supposed to be one of the Tailies.
    • The tail section of the plane was supposed to have no survivors to begin with, but did not so that Bernard would stay alive.
      • Zack, Emma, and Cindy are also still alive.
        • Cindy was a flight attendant. She didn't have a specific seat.

Marksman

  • Served time in the military, becoming an expert rifle shot.
    • He learned his skills with a rifle by hunting for sport, Rose tells him that "this is not pheasant hunting".
    • This would explain where he learned Morse Code. He was a decoder in the military and to be a decoder, he had to know Morse code.

Boy Scout

Bernard is like Locke as he was a boy scout, possibly an Eagle Scout but not obsessed with nature/island.

  • Once upon a time, to become a First Class Boy Scout, one had to know either Morse or some other code system. However, there are two remaining points:
    • We have not learned how Bernard maintained his fluency in Morse.

General

  • In a deleted scene on the season one DVD, the pilot is speaking to Claire in the airport about his mother. He tells her a story about how a tarot card reader told his mother that she would meet the perfect man whose name starts with an "R." He explains how she dumped her current boyfriend, a balding man named Bernard, and looked for this perfect man. Bernard then sold his company and became a multi-millionaire. It is likely that the Bernard in his story is the same Bernard that is married to Rose. However, seeing that this scene was deleted before the episode aired, it is unknown whether or not the writers will use this in Bernard's story. Also, since we know that Bernard is a dentist, we do not know enough about his past to make any assumptions, but this could be a possibility.
  • It's possible that he's more important than we think, since his wife was healed by the Island, he's the only Tailie remaining with the Losties, and he saved Claire during "Live Together, Die Alone".
