Cerberus is a name used many times on the blast door map. ("Lockdown") It was revealed by Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof as being another name for the Monster at Comic Con 2007's Lost panel. Cuse said that Cerberus was one of the Monster's names, and Lindelof confirmed that both Radzinsky and Kelvin referred to the Monster as Cerberus, and suggested that Cerberus "might have just been the DHARMA Initiative's name" for the Monster.

In Greco-Roman mythology, Cerberus was the three-headed watchdog of Hades who permitted spirits to enter the lower world and prevented them from leaving. Only a few heroes ever got by Cerberus, including Orpheus (who charmed him with music), Hercules (who, depending on the myth, either wrestled him into submission or charmed him with kindness) and, in Roman myth, Aeneas and Psyche (both of whom drugged him). Cerberus was the child of Typhon and Echidna.

The backs of the Official Jigsaw Puzzles revealed that the "C.V." notations on the blast door map stand for CERBERUS VENT.

Associations with the Monster

As Radzinsky and Kelvin referred to the Monster as Cerberus, there are similarities between the mythological creature and the Monster.

  • In "Exodus, Part 2", Jack prevented Locke from getting dragged into a deep underground cavern by the Monster; the mythological Cerberus guarded the underground world. By using the term "CV" (Cerberus vents), Radzinsky and Kelvin were likely referring to underground vents such as this hole. References to the underworld also exist on the blast door map notations.
  • When Juliet and Kate encountered the Monster in "Left Behind", it emerged from the jungle as three separate streams of black smoke, which then formed together; the mythological Cerberus had three heads. It behaved in the same way in Lost: Via Domus when Elliott encountered it at the beginning of the "Whatever it Takes" chapter; it came together into one cloud from three separate "heads".
  • In "The Shape of Things to Come", when the monster attacks the mercenaries one of them is dragged off into the treeline. When this occurs the part of the monster which does this appears somewhat similar to a dog's head biting down on the mercenary. Also, when the monster comes out from behind the houses, the front of it's long, snake-like body appears to be the head of a dog. And, when the monster reaches the treeline, it splits into at least three different parts similar to the events in "Left Behind".

Trivia

  • In Dante's Inferno, Cerberus inhabits the Third Circle of Hell, where he torments the gluttonous. Cerberus is described as "black" and as a "great worm".
  • Cerberus is also the common name for dog-faced water snakes, a genus of water snakes in the Colubridae family.
  • Kerberos (Greek spelling) is a system used in electronic-token-based computer authentication.
  • In the production building on the Disney lot where the Lost production has been housed, Cerberus is the name of the safety and fire protection system. The three-headed dog logo can be found all over the grounds.
