In Flashes Before Your Eyes, Ms. Hawking first mentions that the universe has a way of course-correcting itself. She points out a man wearing red shoes to Desmond. Moments later, the man is killed by falling scaffolding. When Desmond questions why she didn't alert the man, she insists that the man was going to die despite their actions.

Instances of Course-Correction
- Desmond repeatedly tries to save Charlie. However, he explicitly mentions that no matter what he does, Charlie has to die. ("Flashes Before Your Eyes") Indeed, Charlie dies in the Looking Glass. ("Through the Looking Glass")
- When his conscience places him in the past, Desmond attempts to buy the ring for Penelope and change his fate. Instead, he ends their relationship and proceeds with the course of action that leads him to the island. ("Flashes Before Your Eyes")
