Diamond Head Crater
From Lostpedia
Diamond Head is a volcanic tuff cone crater to the south-east of Honolulu, Hawaii. It's comparatively dry basin and greyish soil in collaboration with the presence of military installations made it the filming location of choice for depicting Iraq. Presumably some CGI had to be applied to create a credible Iraqi environment, because there is no such vast, empty plain in the volcano, as can be seen in the show.
The crater is thought to have been created in a matter of days through a single explosive eruption about 200,000 years ago. It remained active for a subsequent 50,000 years and now is an essential Hawaiian hallmark. The volcano's monogenetic nature makes any further eruptions highly unlikely, which is why it is now frequently visited by tourists.
Trivia
