Relevance to LOST
Juxtapositional eugenics was one of the research goals of the DHARMA initiative according to the first old Hanso Foundation site. The Foundation set up a "Juxtapositional Eugenics Development Institute" for the research.
Notes
Eugenics is selective breeding to preserve certain, usually good, genes in future generations. How juxtapositionality relates to eugenics has not been explained by the show.
Juxtapositional Eugenics likely refers to eugenics thrugh direct manipulation of genetic material. The fusion and juxtaposition of genes are well established subjects in biology. While traditional Eugenics is based on selective breeding to preserve favored traits, Juxtapositional Eugenics would be building better traits in humans through direct genetic manipulation. It can also refer to transgenic organisms (organisms with foriegn DNA integrated into their genome).
It's worth remembering the word games abundant in lost - 'Juxtapositional Eugenics Development Institute' can be shortened to form the acronym 'JEDI'. This maybe a clue as to the purpose of the department or simply a nod to 'Star Wars' (in joke/easter egg).
