Used by
John Locke aka. "Jeremy Bentham"

The coffin in the funeral parlor is first seen in "Through the Looking Glass" in Jack's flash-forward. The identity of the deceased individual inside the coffin is not revealed to the audience until "There's No Place Like Home, Parts 2 & 3". Jack learned of the death through a obituary for "Jeremy Bentham", which he evidently recognized as the alias of John Locke.

When Jack visits the Hoffs/Drawlar Funeral Parlor, the casket is closed. The funeral director informs him that he is the only one to come to the viewing. He then asks Jack if he is friend or family of the deceased; Jack replies that he is "neither." When asked if he wants the casket opened, Jack says no and the director leaves. Jack lays a hand on the casket, appearing deeply saddened. ("Through the Looking Glass") He later breaks in to the parlor, and opens the casket, revealing that the person in the coffin is John Locke, under the alias of "Jeremy Bentham". ("There's No Place Like Home, Parts 2 & 3")

Producer's comment

  • On December 7, 2007, executive producer Carlton Cuse confirmed that the person in the coffin is a character that the audience has seen before. [1]
  • Although the obituary shown in "Through the Looking Glass" names the deceased as Jo[.. ..]antham who died in "The Tower" (Apartments?) on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles, it has been stated by the producers that the obit will be rewritten for a later show, and the one in "Through the Looking Glass" should be considered a prop only.[source needed]

Production notes

  • Two alternate versions of the reveal were shot, showing Desmond and Sawyer in the coffin. Both clips were shown on the Friday, May 30, 2008 broadcast of Good Morning America, and can also been seen here: [2]
