Scott and Steve
From Lostpedia
| This article refers to a discussion that cannot reach an unanimous consensus. For the sake of clarity this article explains that Scott is dead and Steve is alive. You can find more information in the talk page. |
The characters Scott Jackson and Steve Jenkins are frequently confused on the Island; one of them is deceased and it is somewhat unclear which of the two it is. The characters were seen together in one scene before one of them was killed, presumably by Ethan. (In the episode "The Moth" the characters identify themselves individually. The character that is buried in "Homecoming" is the one who identifies himself as Scott during "The Moth.") Even though Scott or Steve are deceased, they are still confused by the lostaways and the confusion has persisted as a running joke on the show.
Scott and Steve have always been confused; whether it was intentional in the beginning or not, the writers have continued to use the confusion as a running joke. The humor of the joke is that none of the lostaways can tell Scott and Steve apart, even weeks after one of them died.
According to transcripts and overall continuity, Scott is the one who is dead and Steve is alive still alive and well. Carlton Cuse and Adam Horowitz have confirmed that Scott is dead and Steve is alive (Carlton Cuse and Adam Horowitz in an interview with E!). However Dustin Watchman, the actor who has been credited as Scott Jackson, has continued to appear on Lost as an extra in Season 2, well after his character Scott is presumed deceased. Christian Bowman, who was credited as Steve, played "the body" that was buried in "Homecoming." This may be due to a continuity/casting error, or might be intentionally done to continue the running joke surrounding the mis-identification of these two characters.

Producers' commentary in the Podcast
In the 10/30/06 podcast, Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse answered a fan question and essentially laid to rest any rumors that the confusion between the two characters was significant or anything more than a joke. They also gave some background as to how it all began with the cast.
| “ |
Carlton Cuse: "Supposedly, the character Scott died in the episode, 'Homecoming'. However, closer inspection reveals that it was actually Steve's body that was found, and Scott still appeared on the series in Season 2. Why do all the survivors except Sawyer and Ana-Lucia still think it was Scott who died, and will this have some payoff later, or is it just an extension of the gag?" Damon Lindelof: The latter. It's just an extension of the gag. In fact, I think Scott is dead and Steve is alive. But for some reason, that part of your brain that just cannot wrap your brain around something, just… I cannot remember. Carlton Cuse: In fact, there was actually some confusion, because when the two actors who played Scott and Steve were informed that one of them was dying, they each claimed to be portraying the actor that was living. Damon Lindelof: Right, in the script, for example, they find Steve's body, and both of them said "I'm Scott!" [Both laugh] Because we had never named them. Carlton Cuse: And we were struggling, we actually thought we knew who was Scott and who was Steve, but we really didn't, and in fact… then we got into a huge thing, we got the dailies back, and it was still hard to determine who was Scott and who was Steve. Damon Lindelof: Then we gave each actor a rock, and then we said, "Whoever's left standing gets to be Scott." Carlton Cuse: That's right. So one of them died, but we don't know which one! [Laughs] Damon Lindelof: We don't know which one. So… that's the true story. | ” |
