Storyline

  • There will be scenes on and off the Island due to some survivors staying and some leaving.
  • The flashforwards of "Through the Looking Glass" happens in this season time.
  • We will find out why Jack and Locke say the Oceanic 6 "Have to go back".
  • Jack's false Oceanic 6 story from when he lied on the stand at Kate's trial will come to light, and he'll be confronted by relatives and friends of other passengers, perhaps Liam Pace, Cassidy Phillips, Teresa Cortez, Helen, and Sabrina Carlyle. His guilt of what happened to those left behind will then start to get to him.
    • Possibility that Kate and Cassidy will see each other again and Kate will find out about Cassidy and Sawyer's past, including those two having a daughter.
      • That seems almost guaranteed as Sawyer says 'I have a daughter' to Kate and that she has to find her.
  • Season 5 is about the DHARMA Initiative.
  • The producers have stated that in future seasons the idea we have of 'now' will be different to that of the first 4 seasons. At the moment, we think of the events following the crash as 'now' with everything else being a flashforward/back. In season 5 it is likely that 'now' will be the events following Jack and Ben's conversation over Locke's coffin, with the flashbacks being what happened on the island after it was moved, culminating in the O6's return to the island at the end of S5.
  • We will not see the "present" Island again until season 6. Season 5 will be the story of how the O6+ (Desmond, Penny, Lapidus and Walt) get back to the Island. The characters left on the Island will appear in Flashes - forward and back as well as visions. The only time we will return to the Island is in a Flashback as we learn the connection between Widmore, Paik, Hanso, Dharma and the Black Rock. Season 6 will then be one straight story with no flashes at all. It will pick back up with the O6+ leaving, tell us the story of what happened on the Island, then the O6+ will return and then we will see the end of the story.
    • It's very unlikely that we won't see Daniel, Charlotte, Miles, Juliet, Sawyer etc in season 5. And they're stuck on the island.
  • Season 5 will be about the O6+'s return to the island. Maybe by crashing another plane?
  • We will not see the surviving Losties until season 6. Season 5 will detail the history of the island, including the landing of the Black Rock, the formation of the DHARMA Initiative, the backstories of the the group's leading members, as well as Ben and Annie's story and the incidents that led up to the Purge and eventually the arrival of the Losties. Somehow, this season will tie in with the new Lost ARG which is currently "recruiting" new members for the Dharma Initiative, who may possibly time travel to form the Initiative.

Characters

  • Locke and Sawyer will survive season 4 and their stories will take place on the island. They may be integrated into the Others.
    • Claire and Miles will be dead, while Jin and Juliet will either be dead or join with Locke's group.
      • Jack and possibly Sun will want to go back for those left behind, including Jin and Juliet.
        • Sun mourns at Jin's grave when she gives birth in a flashforward, unlikely that Jin is still alive on The Island.
          • If anything, it is likely that Jin is still alive. We didn't know the circumstances of his supposed death during her visit to the grave. We now know it is because she saw the freighter blow up with him on it. However we didn't see him die, and I strongly believe the TPTB would not kill Jin off. There will be another great story arc for a Jin/Sun reunion.
          • It is worth noting that Jin does not have a grave. Sun visits his memorial marker. Officially, Jin drowned.
          • Jeremy Bentham may have informed her of Jin's survival when he visits each of the O6.
            • How do we know Locke visited Sun? The only people we know for sure he visited was Jack, Kate and Walt. Sun was all the way in London, England at the time (or at least in that time frame, presuming that the flashforwards of the Season 4 finale were all close to each other time-wise)
      • It is possible that there will be some invalidation of the freighter's explosion due to the time differences on and off the island, especially after they moved it. The freighter may not have exploded at all in the set timezone.
        • From what you're saying, it seems you are behind the theory of different dimensions, i.e. one in which the freighter explodes and one in which it doesn't. I'm pretty sure the time differences shown thus far, as evidenced by Farraday's experiment and the Doc washing up dead before he actually dies, don't reflect different dimensions. The Island shifts the perception of time if you don't enter the island from the correct "portal", which is the bearing of 305 (or 325 at the end of season 2 with Michael). I'm also pretty sure the writers made a point of moving the freighter closer to the island, to illustrate that it hand entered the island's "barrier." Thus Jin will be transported in time with the island after jumping off the ship, along with Farraday and the red shirts.
  • Locke, Jin, and Sawyer will be alive in the future on the Island.
  • On the island, Claire and Sawyer will begin a relationship now that Kate is gone and Charlie is dead.
  • A new set of characters will be introduced, who were in the place where the island appears (a la the black rock). This may then lead to a sickness.
  • Miles will become a key character in Season 5 - his apparent ability to communicate with the dead and hear/interpret the whispers on the island will make him a valuable source or insights as to how the island works and what has/is happening there. This may also make Miles a direct threat to Locke as the new leader of the Others (chosen in part because he heard Jacob), and may also be a threat to the Others as a whole, since he has a direct way to get information about the island that they can't manipulate or control.
Season 6 will then be one straight story picking up on the Island with the O6+ leaving, telling the story on the Island, then the O6+ return and we will see what happens to end the story.
  • Claire is now a ghost/apparition since she is seemingly in cahoots with the undead Christian Shephard. Thus we will not see much of her except in brief appearances as has been the case with Christian and other undead appearances.
    • We will also learn more about the Shephard and Littleton families, as this bloodline appears extremely important to the history and leadership of The Island. We may also find out about Jack's grandfather, whom Christian called a "great man."
  • Penny will be a part of the reccuring cast along with Lapidus.

Events

  • We will see how the Black Rock arrived on the Island, because that arrival is the beginning of the current human history of the Island.
  • We will see the Island arrive at its new location, because it has to go somewhere/somewhen, but we will not know where/when that is.
  • Richard will begin explaining the mysteries of the Island to Locke, because that was a promise from Ben.
  • Locke will do something terribly wrong, such as release Jacob from his cabin.

Flashbacks/Flashforwards

  • There will be no flashbacks of the original Survivors; their backgrounds are fairly well known. There will be on-island stories and off-island stories and occasional flashforwards, but no more flashbacks.
  • There will be flashbacks about the scientists, because we know too little about them.
  • There will at least one flashback of Rousseau to tell us what really happened from the time the French team was stranded on the Island until Alex was kidnapped.
  • Ben will receive an on Island flashback explaining events surrounding the time he got caught in Rousseau's net during season 2.
  • Season 5 will be one long flashback detailing the island's history and will progress no further in time than the "present" at the end of Season 4.

Determining the present

The present will be October of 2005, because we have yet to learn:

  • The real name of the group we call the Others.
  • Whether or how well the Others, the Survivors and the Scientists integrate.
  • Enough about the conflict between Widmore and Linus.
  • Why Locke needed the Oceanic Six to return.

The Format of Season Five

  • The final scene of season four is now regarded as "present". The old flash-forwards depicting life off-island 2005-2007 will continue to reveal crucial story line information but will be referred to as flashbacks. There will probably be no more flash-forwards.
    • The producers have said they are all but done with flash-backs.
    • If we start in 2005 and Walt is to be involved in the plot, it can only be through flashforward.
  • Next season will have half of the episodes focusing on the 06/Ben (real world) and the other half focusing on Locke+Friends (island). It will most likely be similar to the start of Season 3, where episodes focused on just one side of the island (however, in this case, it will be one half of the world).
  • The Season will retain the same format. Once the Island disappeared, there were no more scenes on the Island. Time operates wobbly when going to and from the Island. The Oceanic Six, and fellow travelers, will return to a point in the Island's time line shortly after they departed. Thus flash forwards will still occur, but these flash forwards may or may not be in the 'future' of the personal experiental time line of any of the Oceanic 6. For example, Jack, el al., mysteriously wander about the Island with Locke and the others, keeping ominously silent, while flash forwards explain how Jack regathered everyone to return them to the Island, and other flash forwards play out other mysteries after the Oceanic 6 period.
    • Of course there is the difficulty of Locke returning at the same time as them, as he has not left yet, but how much trouble could his body cause. And Locke allegedly told them things were horrible after they left, as Bentham.
      • But, Locke, as Bentham, could merely be putting into place the necessary pieces so that the Oceanic 6 will return as he knows they will. That is to say, Bentham will have already experienced the return to the Island of the Oceanic 6 before he sets about sending them back. They will in turn have experienced his funeral before meeting him on the return to the Island with his body. Further, things could still be really bad after the Oceanic 6 both leave and immediately return.
      • Either time has passed between the O6 leaving and returning, or it has not. If time did not pass, there literally was no time for the "bad things" to happen. Since we obviously know that bad things did happen, time must have passed in between them leaving and returning. Other explanations are a parallel timeline, or a time loop, for each of which further evidence would need to be found, unlike for the much simpler explanation that simply they don't return to almost the moment they left, but to a later time. That said, it is entirely possible that it will turn out to be more complex than that, but we shouldn't read too much into existing facts.
        • Time could have passed faster on the island. Bentham says bad things have happened over time on the island (less time off). The O6 return to the island at a point before the bad things happen, to prevent them from happening.
  • Season 5 will continue the narrative on the island: Right now we know a lot about what happens off-island after the rescue, but we know absolutely nothing about on-island events after the move. Season 5 will catch us up there. Season 6 will begin with the O6 and the other off-island players. Half-way through season 6 the O6 will return to the island and the end of the story will play out there.
    • So, Kate, Jack, Hurley, Sayid, Sun, and Ben will be left out of the show until Season 6? I doubt it...
  • The format of Season 4 followed the format of the Finale of Season 3, ie Flashforwards. The format of the Finale of Season 4 began with the Losties leaving the island, then recounted the events that led up to it. That said, Season 5 will begin with the O6 (and possibly more) returning to the island, and the remainder will be the events that took place off-island.
  • Season 5 will probably contain present times of those off the island and the events that happen between 2005 and the final scene with Jack and Ben. The flashforwards will be of after the events of the finale where they are trying to find the island again.Maybe halfway in to season 5 they will make it back to the island, but more likely they will go back at the end of the season, and occasionally during season 5 we will see the present of the island or the flashforwards of it.
