The shooting victim was a man that Eko as a young boy was forced to kill ("The 23rd Psalm"). The Nigerian militants pulled out an old man for young Yemi to shoot in the head. He was unable to do it, so young Eko took the gun from his hands and killed the man instead, to save his brother from repercussions and further trauma. The militant thugs laughed and called Eko a "born killer", and kidnapped him.
