I've recently flown a Cessna C182, and I took the chance to try that out. I saw a lake up ahead while flying at 2500 feet and at 140 knots. I said, "well, if I keep on this heading, I should pass over that lake. Let's see the difference if I change my heading by one degree." So I did. By the time I'd passed by the lake, it was far to my left. And that was only a few kilometers. Think about M&W now. They were going somewhere that was probably several hundred kilometers away. If the heading had been one degree off, they wouldn't have found that secret exit.
