Talk:Dart

From Lostpedia

I've removed the following from the main page because I believe it to be obviously incorrect. I'm keeping it here in case there's disagreement.

"The dart featured in "Tricia Tanaka Is Dead" (information below), is a blow dart. Most blow darts are rather ineffective by themselves due to their small size, and because of this fact are normally dependent upon some type of poison within a hollow needle. However, no such evidence of poison on the dart featured in the episode of lost has yet been seen.

"It is interesting to note that darts have not been commonly seen outside nomadic or barbaric cultures since the introduction of the bow and arrow." --Bastion 11:36, 21 March 2007 (PDT)

That information is actually correct. If you would like to verify you can check out the history of darts over at wikipedia. As far as the blowdart/throwingdart, that can be debated I believe. The information was included so that the article would be less stub-ish and the bit about the absence of darts since arrows is something to provide thought onto the people who left the dart. I vote it goes back, but will let someone else make that decision.   Hooper   talk    contribs    email   11:39, 21 March 2007 (PDT)

After looking at the larger image, with the length of the dart, I may actually have to agree with the comment that it is a sporting dart. This brings up a thought: was there a dart board in the hatch? I can't recall off the top of my head but after the hatch went boom I wonder if this could be a dart from it, which could ease all thoughts of any other dart-throwing natives. Thoughts?   Hooper   talk    contribs    email   11:44, 21 March 2007 (PDT)

Yep, the hatch had a dartboard. Nobody actually played with it, but it was near the armory door. The dart in the image is half-melted and crumpled, so it looks a little odd, but it's definitely from the Swan implosion. In fact, as the hatch is imploding and objects are flying around, there's a shot of all the darts getting yanked off the board and flying across the room. --Shodan1138 11:47, 21 March 2007 (PDT)

I should clarify. I agree that the documentary information about hunting darts is accurate. But if the dart is a pub dart, the remainder is no longer relevant to Lostpedia. To me, that photograph is clearly a pub dart. You can see the shape of the barrel and the bit at the back looks like melted synthetic fletching, not the wadding that would be on a blowgun dart. From a practical standpoint, I also don't think a natural material hunting dart would get through Sawyer's boot sole. --Bastion 12:00, 21 March 2007 (PDT)
