Theory 1: Built by DHARMA

Evidence:

• On Ben's map, the Temple has a DHARMA logo next to it [1]. So far, all the Dharma logos have been affiliated with stations built by Dharma.

• Many of the Dharma stations have names which allude to Greek mythology (i.e. The Swan, The Orchid, The Hydra), these do not necessarily mean that there is some religious purpose to the temple.

• The Temple is the "ark" to the Tempest's "flood" of poison, which could kill everyone on the island.

• The Temple is a secret Dharma station that was not on the blast door map. Ben, after the Purge, drew the map on the blast door map without the temple as to hide it in case of emergency. This is why he calls it the last and only safe place on the Island.

Theory 2: Built by the Hostiles

Evidence:

• The name implies it has a religious/spiritual function.

• It may also be a "magical" place with special powers.

• The Dharma station "Temple" may be built on top of a powerful feature of the island, like the Frozen Donkey Wheel in the Orchid.

Counter-evidence:

• Many of the Dharma stations have names which allude to Greek mythology (i.e. The Swan, The Orchid, The Hydra), these do not necessarily mean that there is some religious purpose to the temple.

• So far, only the Orchid has a secret, island based feature beneath it, this is not evidence that the Temple does.

• • Ben's House at The Barracks also conceals an ancient island feature.

• Besides the Black Rock, we know of no buildings for sheltering occupants built by earlier inhabitants of the island.

• A temple built by ancient inhabitants would not be a good place to hide if there was an emergency (the reason for the Others going there. A Dharma station with emergency rations and supplies would be far more useful and strategic.

Function

• Ben calls it the last safe place on the island - meaning it must be a strategic stronghold for inhabitants with supplies for survival.

• The Temple is the "ark" to the Tempest's "flood" of poison, which could kill everyone on the island. The Temple is a place for the people who know about it to hide.

It could be some type of bomb shelter/safety bunker for members of the Initiative in case of a Hostile take over (no pun intended), destructive electromagnetic anamoly, toxic gas leak from the Tempest, or some other threat.

Location

• The Temple might be near the Four-toed statue, because when Jin, Sun and Sayid are going to the barracks zone through the sea, you can see the statue, at north from the barracks. And the temple seems to be north from the barracks across the mountains, between the mountains and the sea shore. Judging by the statue, it may have been a temple built by the original others, and then adapted for the dharma initiative, because it has its own symbol.(all the names of the stations somehow resemble their logo.

• The Temple is number C1 (11 o' clock position) on the blast door map. This is the crossed out station with "UNKNOWN" written on it. It also has the Latin saying "Sursum corda" which means "Lift up you hands (to GOD)" which seems like it would fit. It is likely the temple was built before DHARMA, but DHARMA updated/modified for its own purposes. Crossing it out on the blast boor map suggests that it is not a DHARMA built station.

• The Temple is station C3 or C4 if the BDM has it marked and in the right position.

• The Temple is shown to be on mountains on the map that Ben gave to Alex. In the episode "There's No Place Like Home Pt 1," Ben used a mirror to send signals to someone, probably Richard and the Others, up on top of some mountains. This is where the Temple is, as you can clearly see some building on the mountains.

• The Temple is located at the volcano, it is mentioned that the volcano will become more important
