The Thug captain was the man who leads the group of militant thugs who comes into Eko's childhood village home to kidnap children to join their ranks. According to the Nigerian priest, they have taken many in the past. He puts a gun in young Yemi's hands and tries to force him to shoot an old man, but Yemi can't do it. Eko then takes the gun, and without hesitation, shoots and kills the man. The thug captain, amusedly addressing the boy by the title of "Mr." Eko, laughs and calls him a "born killer"; he rips off the cross from around Eko's neck and tells him that he won't need it anymore. From that day forth, Eko is kidnapped and lives a life as a ruthless criminal.
