Rules pg

  • Hi Lewis... well, thing is, consensus isn't always a rule by majority vote type thing, though :) You can always suggest things on the General Usage Guide talk page, and if it makes sense, we could work towards implementing them. But as with a forum or anything else, it's more a "suggestion box"; occasionally a vote, but not for everything. There are some rules, for instance, that might not make sense to newer users, but are in place for a reason. For example, moving pages used to be open to all users, but we disallowed it, because it erases the history, and opened up the site to unrevertable vandalism. --PandoraX 16:18, 23 February 2007 (PST)

Images

  • Thanks! Plk made the main background, and some themed, like Xmas and Miami. I made the other holiday ones using the lostbook background, and the dark numbers one. It should be fun to give people some options. --PandoraX 11:35, 24 February 2007 (PST)

Others Strike Team

I'll make a table for you if you can get an admin's permission, I want permission because I made a table for Hurley's stash that was ultimtly rejected, so I just want to be sure I'm not just wasting my time. I like your idea for the Others' Strike Team by the way, sort of like an anti A-Team. --Mr. Crabby (Talk) 14:00, 24 February 2007 (PST)

russia

Thanks for helping with the Russia page. As you have seen we've found a great new user who is contributing a lot of valuable information to that page (as well as voice actors), but his English and wiki skills need a touch of cleanup. If he looks like he needs some help, please allow him a bit of space, and help him out, so that he sticks around for the long term. Thanks! -- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T 03:35, 28 February 2007 (PST)

  • Don't worry you're fine. I didn't mean it that way. I just meant in case he makes an edit that seems way off base. He seems to be editing the page a few time consecutively, so I've been giving him a while before I jump in and format things. I just didn't want to discourage him with edit conflicts, since he has some really good information. -- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T 03:40, 28 February 2007 (PST)

TOC

To force a TOC, use: __FORCETOC__ -- Cheers 13:02, 13 March 2007 (PDT)

Cheers beat me too it, add that at the top of the page and if you want to place the Table of Contents in a certain location on the page, add __TOC__ wherever you want the TOC. -Mr.Leaf 13:05, 13 March 2007 (PDT)

The Clues Pages

  • Just curious as to what changes you're actually making to the pages? Lol :) Also, what A-Levels you doing? :D Sorry, I'm nosy :P --   Lost Soul   talk  contribs  13:36, 13 March 2007 (PDT)
  • Aah interesting on both counts. Sorry to hear the A-Levels aren't going so well - seems like you picked yourself some hard ones! I've picked myself ones which shouldn't be too hard... I hope. --   Lost Soul   talk  contribs  13:41, 13 March 2007 (PDT)

Contacting Vandals

  • Hey, Lewis earlier you contacted a vandal whom was vandalizing the site, as another Sysop hasn't yet, i just thought i would let you know that we prefer you just leave vandals be, and don't interact with them. It just encourages them and makes them feel like they have accomplished their goal (to annoy people mostly). And this is just to let you know for future occasions. And removing his remarks from your talk page is fine, although a better solution would be to not have them made here in the first place. if you have any questions feel free to ask. Thanks, -Mr.Leaf 19:47, 14 March 2007 (PDT)
    • Though if it is B** then I would say just do it cause you're not gonna encourage him any more than he already is, and you might slow him down for a while --Nickb123 (Talk) 03:26, 15 March 2007 (PDT)
      • Sorry I missed you on IRC. Next time, use !memo to save a PM for me --Nickb123 (Talk) 05:48, 15 March 2007 (PDT)
Ya, i know you were just trying to help although it really doesn't matter, it is still quite easy for us to revert their edits.-Mr.Leaf 09:06, 15 March 2007 (PDT)

plkrtn's sig

I advocate that people should be able to borrow the code from people. Lots of people have used the code before, but most of them changed the colours at least!  Plkrtn  talk  contribs  email  04:01, 18 May 2007 (PDT)

mindfuck

Well, when you reach a point where one side of the discussion with a strong point of view archives off an ongoing delete proposal thats going 3-1 against them, there isn't much point in pretending anymore. No matter what the proposal is, its not going anywhere. Dharmatel4 15:25, 23 May 2007 (PDT)

Help with a sig thing would be..helpful =] Owh.. Sig!! I miss him..

News and Updates

There is the News archive for general Lost news since May... but the only thing we've been given since the finale is Comic-Con where we had 1 cast member announcment and 60 seconds of new footage which you can see here but I recommend you listen to the official podcast of the Comic-Con panel before you do anything. Welcome back  Plkrtn  talk  contribs  email  08:59, 23 August 2007 (PDT)

Most of the work going in at the moment is about usability. There is a lot of work in cosmetics as well. But its all about trying to present the information in the best way possible. Things like the Portals being reworked to include characters under their affiliation rather than their billing status, things like that.  Plkrtn  talk  contribs  email  09:45, 23 August 2007 (PDT)

Userpage and vandal

  • Hey, i fixed your user page, you should be able to look at the changes I made and see that I just added a "width: 41% property to all your boxes. This makes them only as big as 41 of the page meaning they nicely fit on the side. Of course it took a little playing around with to find the right number but it's just trial and error. Let me know if you have any more questions. I also banned the vandal and took care of him. -Mr.Leaf 18:10, 6 September 2007 (PDT)

Bloopers problem

I'm guessing you are using IE5 or 6. The problem stems from the document being larger than 32k in size, so it won't display edits properly, and will remove them. If I were you I'd upgrade to Firefox, Safari or IE7.  Plkrtn  talk  contribs  email  05:18, 1 October 2007 (PDT)

article lock

  • The article lock has to do with our spoiler policy. There are some gray areas, such as when canonoical sources confirm spoilerish details, or the Lost Moments promotions/sneak previews, but in general the main article space of the LP wiki should be completely free of spoilers, for the enjoyment of the broadest audience. Of course information can still go into designated wiki areas such as Season 4/spoilers, Talk:Season_4/spoilers, and Season_4/spoilers/Theories, well as in forums in the spoiler subforum. I'm going to drop the issue of this particular article by the other sysops directly, but I think locking it follows precedent of other articles of the same nature.-- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T 02:53, 12 October 2007 (PDT)

shootings

  • Hi, I'm looking at it and thinking. We had a discussion about this earlier, which was two problems with tables: 1) do they actually help to look up the information, or hinder it (i.e. is it cosmetic or functional?); and 2) do they make it so hard to edit for normal users that they simply stagnate unedited except by the user who made the table? With regard to point 1, we have so many shootings that a colorful large table will make the page so long it is now more difficult to simply look up who shot whom; the visiting reader will have to scroll through pages and use memory to do what previously could be gleaned from a glance. Therefore I'm leaning toward the opinion that this type of table does not actually make the information easier to digest, especially since it isn't intrinsically a visual topic (such as visual effects). Of course we have information-packed articles like voice actors which really benefits from a table, or shorter tables like rivalries which can sometimes benefit from the boxed list treatment. However with shootings, there is a lot of redundancy and empty space. The numbering doesn't really give information (we similarly removed numbering from the music table), and the large boldface word "shootings" is similarly redundant. There is also a lot of empty space and scrolling for episode, shooter, victim, which was previously compactly contained in a single line. I'm not sure we need the circumstance and result- the article's main purpose is to illustrate how many times the Lost writers resort to using guns writing in their storyline, and with which characters-- and the crossrefs easily provides a link to circumstance/result in the episode article. However even in list form, the singles lines usually indicate whether someone was fatally shot or not, or whether shots were even fired (no = holdup). The one really cool thing you've added is tracking how many shots were fired, that's a keeper for sure. Your thoughts on these issues of readability and editability? -- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T 12:56, 12 October 2007 (PDT)
  • Yes your idea for a second section with a table is fine, since what that does is not cosmetic: it actually enhances the delivery of information (number of shots, etc.). The other cosmetic parts that obscure information is what I object to; each shooting does not need a box and a fan title for the event, and blank colored space, and "filler" analysis just for the sake of filling space. -- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T 20:50, 15 October 2007 (PDT)
  • Hey, shootings is looking hot. Great work! Thanks for working with me on this one, it's been a fun article, and you've put a lot of good work into it. -- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T 01:03, 8 November 2007 (PST)

FA and AA

  • Thanks for noticing the FA, looks like no one got around to it this week. I'll take a look at it. As for the AA, the Community Portal is where it is announced usually. However we have put it on hold until likely the start of Season 4 due to lack of interest. The last few AA's got only 1 or 2 people entering, and usually at least 1 of them was a sysop so...we decided to put it on hold for a bit. -Mr.Leaf 13:45, 12 October 2007 (PDT)
AA will likely come back in Jan/Feb or whenever we see in increase in active editors on the wiki which probably won't be until as I said Jan/Feb. As for FA, yes the quality is getting worse and worse, and since no one participates in the nominating or articles it has been mostly up to the mods to pick articles. So there really aren't any winners, and during the hiatus the FA has more become an "article we think you will find interesting" because it has some relevance or interesting points. Bi-weekly is not a bad idea, it is what have been doing for the poll and I think doing that for the FA is a good idea as well. -Mr.Leaf 13:52, 12 October 2007 (PDT)
They are here, just not as active. A few of us are quiet busy with school (me, marik and Nick) and the rest are around. -Mr.Leaf 13:58, 12 October 2007 (PDT)
Real-time is correct. I mistook your edit for switching it to "realtime" but reverted it right after i realized the mistake. Real-time is correct. -Mr.Leaf 14:25, 12 October 2007 (PDT)

Template:Image

  • Hey, i noticed you have been adding template image to a lot of images but only adding the episode category. Template image works for all image categories and we are in the process of adding it to all image pages. The reason being if a category needs to be changed name (regarding learning new names of a category) or indexed easily, then it can be done through the template in effect saving hundreds of edits. Basically what I am saying is while you are adding it solely for the episode categories we are currently removing all the old tags and re-categorizing by template img, which makes it easier and only takes a few more seconds. If you wouldn't mind it makes it easier then going over each image twice. Thanks, -Mr.Leaf 11:58, 17 October 2007 (PDT)
Template:Image kind of goes over the general. I haven't around to specific details. However basic rules,
  1. for any character name, capitalization matters (first letter) but you only have to add the most commonly used name (ie. Jack, Kate, Locke, etc), not complete names.
  2. For anything else (other then character names) all letters are lower case.
  3. I have tried to make the template very usable, most common names/nicknames/short forms work for the categories. If they do not, add it anyway and I can pick through the improperly sorted ones later and add more easy references.
  4. Just copying the name of the category as shown on the previous tag () should work with proper capitalization based on the above rules. You can go through Category:Template:Image for all the images that use it to see how they are tagged.
  5. For copyright templates, they can be added via template image to but it is not necesary, to do it add copy=promo or copy=tvs as one of the fields.
  6. There is a 5 field limit per template. So only add it to 5 cats with 1 template. But you can add the template to the image page twice if needed to add more then 5 cats, if you get what I am saying.

Let me know if you have any questions. -Mr.Leaf 12:33, 17 October 2007 (PDT)

"Cooper" will work now. If you think something should work and doesn't add it anyway. If the template doesn't recognize it will put it in a special category, which I can go through after and correct either those images or the template to make them work. So If it doesn't work and you think it should add it anyway and I will fix it later. -Mr.Leaf 12:33, 17 October 2007 (PDT)

Great Work

  • I noticed you have been taking up the whole recent changes menu categorizing images using template:img and so I thought you deserve this:

Moved to user page

Move it your userpage if you want. Once again, thanks for the help, it's much appreciated.

Shannon

  • Why did you undo my editing? I extended the article to give more information plus I added more pictures. This may just be my opinion, but I think it was better with my edits. Could you please undo your edits?
    • I understand where you are coming from, now I think about it... you're right. I guess im the type of guy that likes lots of detail. Plus, I don't want to start and edit War. :P

-User:Browndog922

  • Lewis, there are two issues:
    1. Like you, I lean toward summaries. The character articles are digests, or brief biographies. However they are not transcripts, and certainly are not paraphrasing of transcripts-- that's what the transcript articles are for. If these character (or episode) articles become exhaustive play-by-plays, they also become 1) redundant with the transcripts and 2) lose all usefulness an easily readable reference article for the general user since wading through text becomes an obstacle to relevant content. If further detail is required, generally the search function will yield related and more specific articles, or the actual episode transcript.
    2. Looks like browndog922 was applying what we would categorize as a "major change" to an article. Typically this requires a discussion template for a major change, and can only proceed with consensus achieved in discussion. Note that such a consensus is reached by rationales, and not by vote count.
  • Therefore the article should remain at its default for the time being, with the option for the use of the discussion template. Wikified links to proposed drafts of the article hosted in the user's own userspace is also an option in such a discussion, e.g. user:browndog922/Shannondraft -- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T 02:10, 10 November 2007 (PST)
